Located approximately 200 km (124 mi) north of Wellington,
Wanganui is an attractive city on the North
Island's west coast where the mighty Whanganui
River meets the sea. The river is an integral part of Wanganui's history and
culture. Originally drawing Maori settlers to its sheltered valley and the fertile
land flanking the river, the rich landscape soon attracted European settlers and
in 1840 a town called Petre was established. The town's name was officially changed
to Wanganui in 1854.
Supported by a healthy farming industry, Wanganui is a thriving city known
for its heritage, arts and natural beauty. Visitors can get an overview of the
area's history at the Whanganui
Regional Museum, and a taste of the past at sites around town, such as the
Whanganui
Riverboat Centre—home to the Waimarie paddle steamer—and the 1900
Royal
Wanganui Opera House. The Sarjeant
Gallery is equally renowned for its architecture as its superb collection
of significant artworks, and locals and visitors flock to Mainstreet
for the annual Glass
Festival. But perhaps Wanganui's crowning glory is Whanganui
National Park, a stunning river valley reserve and premier destination for
canoeing, jet boating and hiking.
