Mt Ngauruhoe Located in Tongariro National Park, Ngauruhoe is actually a vent of the larger, neighbouring Mt Tongariro. This semi-active volcano last erupted in June 1996 covering a popular ski hill on its slopes with ash. Mt Ruapehu is the North Island's highest peak at 2797 metres (9,175 feet) and attracts more than just skiers; interpretive walks, chairlift rides and a cafe make the volcano also popular in the summer.
